The Energy Desk have assisted HICA with regards to their energy procurement and sustainability requirements for several years. HICA (Humberside Independent Care Association) have a group of more than 20 care sites, and the expert team at TED Generation were asked to review the various sites current electricity and gas consumption to assess the suitability of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) for the business.

Free CHP Feasibility Study

TED Gen calculated the feasibility of a CHP project designed for the specific needs of the organisation via an Initial Feasibility Study before carrying out an on-site review to determine the specific installation options and costings.

A number of sites were applicable for a CHP installation – one of which being the Retirement Care Village at Buckshaw, Euxton.

Buckshaw Retirement Village is a purpose-built retirement community run by HICA.

The site has 2 distinct buildings: The Court is an apartment complex where the residents own the apartments, and there are shared communal areas. Their utilities are centrally provided and are part of the service cost. The Lodge is a more traditional care home, where each of the residents have their own room. The boiler / plants rooms are separate for both buildings.

Proposed Solution / Scheme Size

Based on the analysis of the Half Hour electrical grid data provided, TED Generation proposed a 50KW CHP unit be installed at the Lodge and another 100KW CHP unit to be installed at the Court. The initial analysis of the data shows that given the high electrical demand the units could look to run constantly throughout the year and this would generate the following after allowance for service downtime;
